(3 customer reviews)

The 6.5 Grendel round is a popular alternative caliber for AR-15 platform owners who want to increase long distance hunting or target shooting performance compared to .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO. Available in 18″ length with either HBAR contour or the lighter Hybrid contour, and 22″ in HBAR contour.

Description

Chambers are finished to accommodate Type II bolts (with a .136 recess), but barrels should still be headspaced and installed by a qualified gunsmith. Each barrel comes with a proprietary barrel extension incorporating a finer thread pitch to allow for greater chamber wall thickness to accommodate the 6.5 Grendel’s higher pressure for added reliability and safety.

Optional factory headspaced JP Enterprises bolt/barrel combination available.

I purchased a bare Criterion 6.5 Grendel barrel. The first thing I did was clean the barrel and check the barrel out with a bore scope. Next the bore was checked with gauge pins. The barrel passed my test. I swapped the Criterion barrel into a complete upper I was not satisfied with. I made sure the barrel was aligned and tight in the upper. Put a new scope on the completed upper and took it to the range. After about 30 rounds, checking the AR function and scope placement & alignment, I started testing hand loads. Using Hornady 95 grain V-Max bullets and IMR 8208XBR powder, I found my load. I put 5 rounds into 0.40″ at 100 yards. I am old and do not shoot that well. When I tried to duplicate that 0.40″ group, I fell short. My 5 shot group swelled to .77″. I thought I had duplicated the load. My chronograph told me the next batch of reloads were about 100fps slower. I upped the powder charge by 0.2 grains and had a friend that shoots better than me try. If you throw out one shot, He did make the .040″ goal. That one flyer may have been my reloading, or the barrel is not yet broken in. I have not yet fired 100 round through the new Criterion barrel. Now if the availability of parts and cheaper prices comes back, I will build another AR upper.
